What We Believe

Christian Science is based on the Bible, including the teachings of Christ Jesus. Jesus understood God to be Love. He understood that God is good, and he was able to heal based on this spiritual truth in a way that was systematic, logical, and understandable.

Why "Science"?

Christian Scientists believe that spiritual healing — as taught by Christ Jesus — is accessible to anyone today, and that it follows consistent, understandable spiritual laws rather than being random or mysterious. That consistency is why the word "Science" is used.

What are the core beliefs?

That God is entirely good and all-powerful; that Christ Jesus' healing ministry is a model for how prayer can heal today; and that understanding our real, spiritual nature — as opposed to a purely material view of ourselves — brings freedom from sickness, fear, and limitation.

How does a Christian Scientist approach health and healing?

Through prayer that addresses the spiritual cause of a problem, rather than only its physical symptoms — much as Christ Jesus healed. Many members also consult Christian Science practitioners, who devote themselves full-time to healing prayer on behalf of others.

Is Christian Science the same as Scientology?

No — the similar-sounding names are a common source of confusion, but the two are entirely unrelated in origin, teaching, and practice. Christian Science is a Christian denomination founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy.
